IMPORTANCE OF DEVELOPING A STRATEGIC AND DIFFERENTATED COACHING PLAN
Why Develop a Growth Goal Plan? (Aguilar, 2013) (Marzano, & Simms, 2013).
- It provides a road map toward goals
- It is a structure that holds the vision, goals, action steps, evidence, and outcomes
- It enables the coach and teacher to stay focused on intended practices and outcomes
- It can serve as a communication tool
Who Needs a Plan?
Teachers/Teams need a plan because it
- gives them a vision and roadmap of the work ahead,
- engages them in the process, and
- serves as a reflection tool and archive of progress.
Coaches need a plan because it
- specifies support needed to meet each teacher’s needs;
- defines coaching actions and resources needed; and
- provides a record of indicators of progress and outcomes.

- The plan should be developed jointly by the coach and the person or team being coached.
- Focus the plan around effective educational practices (EEP). For more information/resources on EEPs see the Professional Learning Materials page.
- Identify Growth Goals. For individuals/teams who are part of District Continuous Improvement (DCI), begin by using information from a Practice Profile or data from the Self-Assessment Practice Profile (SAPP) to identify areas of growth. Select specific criteria/essential functions you would like to increase.
- Map out a plan to achieve your goal.
- Select indicators of progress (data and evidence) that can be observed and collected.
- Use a progress monitoring document to list who/how/when data was collected and as a record of progress.
Coaching Plans Should
- be a tool focused on outcomes and indicators of success;
- be focused and have a limited number of goals;
- be flexible;
- be dynamic – they are not linear and/or sequential;
- change as coaching develops; and
- be a record of reflections and accomplishments.
