OVERVIEW OF SCHOOL-BASED IMPLEMENTATION COACHING

What is School-Based Implementation Coaching?

School-Based Implementation Coaching (SBIC) is a non-evaluative method of professional learning that supports a learner in applying new learning to their unique context. SBIC can take many forms, but requires a collaborative relationship between at least two professionals; the coach and the person(s) being coached.

The SBIC Practice Profile outlines five essential functions required in any evidence-based coaching process.

  1. Develop and maintain coaching relationships
  2. Provide effective feedback
  3. Develop strategic and differentiated coaching plans
  4. Using solution dialogue
  5. Progress monitor implementation of effective educational practices

The essential functions are not linear steps. The diagram on the left depicts how the essential functions work together to support effective coaching. Essential functions #1 (Develop and maintain coaching relationships) and #2 (Provide effective feedback) are integral to the implementation of the other three essential functions. Essential functions #3 (Develop strategic and differentiated coaching plans), #4 (Use solution dialogue) and #5 (Progress monitor implementation of effective educational practices) create a cycle of continuous growth.
