ESSENTIAL FUNCTION 3 IN PRACTICE

What Does Exemplary Implementation of Essential Function 3 –
Intentionally Act and Analyze Again Look Like?

Essential Function: Educators determine instructional action steps.

  • Develop a written instructional action plan (IAP) including learning goal, evidence of learning, instructional change, method for examining instruction, and impact analysis.
  • Design a lesson or set of lessons addressing the learning goal.
  • Schedule and deliver instructional change (lesson or set of lessons).
  • Collect evidence of learning outlined in the IAP.
  • Outline how engaging students in review of learning data will inform design or delivery of instructional change.

Working through Roadblocks

Review the common roadblocks below and/or add your own.  Select one roadblock and outline specific steps your team could implement to ensure the roadblock does not derail your team.

  • Data is collected, but not analyzed.
  • A specific plan for acting on the data is not created.
  • Connection is not made between instruction and learning.
  • Learning goals are too vague.

What steps can you take to start or improve instructional action planning right now? Reflect on your team’s/building’s current knowledge and implementation of this process and then determine possible next step.
