OVERVIEW

Teacher Leadership involves the roles teachers participate in that have an influence extending beyond their individual classroom/caseloads (Cosenz, 2015). An important characteristic of a teacher leader is their expertise and skill in engaging others in complex work. Teacher leaders can support the development of CTE because they uniquely motivate colleagues to enhance their skills and build a spirit of collaboration. As they persuade others to explore and adopt new strategies and innovative approaches, they play an integral role in building partnerships between teachers, families, and the community.

Lesson 3 is aligned with Essential Function 3 of the CTE Practice Profile. In this lesson you will explore dimensions of teacher leadership, methods school leaders can use to support teacher leaders, and strategies to strengthen teacher leadership that builds CTE.

Essential Function 3: District/Building leaders design school structures, promote professional development, and allot time in ways that support the development of teacher leadership.

  • Work focused on school and/or district improvement
  • Professional development provided by themselves and/or colleagues
