Before we move on to unpack the Essential Functions of DBDM, it is helpful for you to become familiar with certain terms:
Analyze: To systematically examine something to determine possible causative factors
Contextual Data: Data specific to the setting in which a problem occurs; can help teams to identify the cause of a problem.
Contextual Fit: “The extent to which an intervention matches the skills, values, and resources of the individuals who will implement it.” (Scott, Anderson & Alter, 2012).
Data-Based Decision-Making (DBDM): A systematic process for analysis of information that leads to action steps.
DBDM/Meeting Protocol: A standardized protocol or decision-making cycle that guides the team to identify a problem, determine the cause of the problem, select action steps that directly address the cause of the problem, and evaluate the effectiveness of these action steps in addressing the cause problem.
Effective Teaching and Learning Practice (ETLP): A specific subset of evidence-based practices endorsed by the MO DESE.
Evaluate: To assess the effectiveness of a plan on completion.
Evidence-based Practice: A process that can be used in different settings for which there is evidence of effectiveness of achieving a specific outcome.
Fidelity Data: Evidence that an intervention is delivered in the way in which it was designed to be delivered.
Implementation Data: Data to monitor the extent to which plans are put into effect.
Office Discipline Referral (ODR): Documentation of “major” or office managed behavior. Usually includes contextual information (Behavior type, frequency, location, time, and students involved).
Outcome Data: Data gathered to monitor or evaluate progress toward desired outcomes or goals; effect data.
Problem: Opportunity to improve
Progress Monitor: The ongoing collection and review of implementation and outcome data to monitor a plan’s effectiveness. Results Indicators: (from Leadership and Learning); Intermediate measures of implementation and outcomes that are easy to collect and review for purposes of progress monitoring an action plan.
