Foundations of Function-Based Thinking
MO SW-PBS is grounded in the science of behavior known as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Applied Behavior Analysis is the design, implementation, and evaluation of environmental modifications to produce socially significant improvement in behavior. In short, the science of behavior focuses on making changes to the environment to lead to changes in behavior.
Applied behavioral analysis relies on the following assumptions:
- Behavior is learned – over time, individuals learn to demonstrate certain behaviors.
- Behavior has a predictable pattern – in the presence of certain triggers and consequential responses, behavior is maintained. Continued access to these triggers and responses will result in a pattern of behavior developing.
- Behavior is a form of communication – behavior is functionally related to a need. Individuals continue to demonstrate a behavior because there is a need getting met by their behavior.
This module includes lessons covering the science of behavior, human motivation, function-based thinking, and de-escalation. Completion of this course will give teachers the foundational knowledge they need in order to select strategies to support changes in student behavior.
Learning Objectives
- Understand that behavior is predictable.
- Identify antecedent(s), behavior(s), consequence(s) from scenarios.
- Understand the role human motivation plays in behavior.
- Apply human motivation to professional practice.
- Define function of behavior.
- Identify functions that typically maintain behavior.
- Apply functional logic in choosing strategies to manipulate the environment.
- Understand the phases of the Acting Out cycle.
- Identify appropriate strategies based upon phases of the Acting Out cycle.

Pre-Post Educator-Learner Assessments
Pre and post knowledge checks are a component of high-quality professional development. It is recommended that all consultants and other trainers/facilitators use them as they tailor their professional development for their audience. The pre-post knowledge check and the answer key are posted below for downloading and administering.
