Vocabulary Development

This is Module 4 of a 7-part series anchored in the science of reading. This module will focus on vocabulary. Vocabulary plays an important part in learning to read. Beginning readers must use the words they hear orally to make sense of the words they see in print. Vocabulary is also very important to reading comprehension. Readers cannot understand what they are reading without knowing what most of the words mean. As children learn to read more advanced texts, they must learn the meaning of new words that are not part of their oral vocabulary.

Learner Objectives

  • Consider the impact of vocabulary on comprehension
  • Identify the power in words and language
  • Practice activities for vocabulary retention
  • Know the importance of vocabulary before, during, and after reading instruction
  • Take the next steps for application and confirmation in the current instruction
