OVERVIEW OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTION 5: PROGRESS MONITOR IMPLEMENTATION

Essential Function 5: Educators progress monitor implementation of effective educational practice, is part of the coaching cycle that includes both Essential Functions 3 and 4. Educators and coaches start with a focus goal (Essential Function 3) and through the use of solution dialogue (Essential Function 4) they problem solve and refine their implementation of effective educational practices. Progress monitoring (Essential Function 5) enables educators to self-reflect on relevant evidence and determine growth towards their goals. Educators need to determine both a structure for collecting/storing evidence for reflection, as well as artifacts to save as evidence of growth. Progress monitoring also allows for celebration and sharing of educator and student growth throughout the implementation process.

Celebrating and Sharing Success

“Remember to celebrate milestones as you prepare for the road ahead (attributed to Nelson Mandela).”

Timmerman, 2019

Professional growth takes work and persistence. Taking time to celebrate that growth in authentic ways is important to continued motivation and greater growth. Sharing successes and student growth within a district/building can also motivate others towards their own professional growth.

Celebrations help teachers

  • feel valued and appreciated;
  • build confidence;
  • strengthen teacher/team relationships;
  • encourage risk-taking;
  • increase their sense of belonging; and
  • be motivated for further success.
