Data-based Decision Making is…

A problem-solving process for improving teaching and learning. Educators implement the DBDM process primarily in collaborative teams. Analysis, reflection and revision activities within the DBDM process promote and inform instructional planning to foster increased student achievement. DBDM has been around in education for over forty years, however with increased accountability for student learning, a specific and streamlined DBDM model functions as a supportive framework for optimizing instructional decisions.

A RAND review of DBDM research1Marsh, Julie A., Pane, John F., and Hamilton, Laura S. (2006). Making Sense of Data-Driven Decision ...continue outlines the multiple types of data that influence teaching and learning: input (i.e., student information); process data (i.e., teacher quality and performance data); outcome data (i.e., student outcomes on CFAs or other tests); and satisfaction data (i.e., parent/student/teacher surveys regarding a judgment about school functioning) Data that is collected, analyzed, prioritized and synthesized then becomes “actionable knowledge” for making decisions—such as goal setting, addressing individual student or small group needs, or for shaping changes to the curriculum.2Marsh, Julie A., Pane, John F., and Hamilton, Laura S. (2006). Making Sense of Data-Driven Decision ...continue Several factors influence the DBDM process—quality, accessibility, and availability of data; educators’ motivation to use the data; support systems such as organizational culture, leadership, and staff capacity.

Course Outcomes

  • Educators understand the value of DBDM for teaching and learning.
  • Educators identify the core functions of each step of the DBDM process.
  • Educators apply the key components of DBDM to create their own data-guided cycle.

Reflective Questions

About Data Use: How am I currently using data in my classroom? In what ways does my current use of data reflect a data-based decision making process? In what ways should I refine my current practices in order to implement the core functions of each step in the DBDM process?

About Teams: Who can I collaborate with in implementing the DBDM process at my school? What support do we need?
