Components of Effective Literacy: Introduction

This is Module 1 of a 7-part series anchored in the science of reading. The purpose of this training is to introduce the components of literacy as anchored in the Science of Reading.  Participants will understand the importance of the “Simple View of Reading” for reading instruction, the interrelated skills of the “Reading Rope”, and how children’s brains process learning to read. Each session is designed to be completed sequentially beginning with Module 1. Presenters should not skip or remove material from the whole.

Learner Objectives

  • Understand the research behind the “Simple View of Reading”.
  • Understand the “Reading Rope” as well as the interrelated skills needed for developing skilled readers.
  • Explore the Science of Reading and the reading brain.
  • Use the “Flowchart for Literacy Decision-Making” to determine where to begin instruction for struggling readers.
  • Begin to align instruction for reading with evidence-based reading instruction.
